Internally Displaced Persons’ camp, Tow Gate Markurdi, Benue State, Nigeria

The members of this camp were affected by Herdsmen. These people have been staying in the camp for about 4 years. The camp comprises mostly widows and orphans. As in any conflict, men die and the women and children suffer the consequences in the world without any help.

The struggle for economic resources like land and water between farmers and nomadic cattle herders has led to a lot of bloodshed in the country since 2010. Believe it or not deaths by this conflict is higher than the terrorist attacks in Nigeria. 89% of the demised are civilians. Over 9,000 civilians have been internally displaced.

We provided aid for the internally displaced but we felt that was not enough. It just gave immediate relief but we would like to

  • teach women crafts and empower them for self-sustenance
  • give scholarships to the children and provide them with proper education and a conducive environment for learning
  • provide proper water and sanitation
  • give a sustainable future away from these temporary camps
